World first liquid energy storage project confirmed in Manchester
A world-first liquid energy project has been confirmed in Manchester.Stockport-based MAN Energy Solutions has formally signed a contract to provide its LAES turbomachinery solution to Highview Power’s CRYOBattery facility.The signing took place at Highview’s London offices and follows on the agreement previously reached by the companies in April 2021.Highview, who specialise in long-duration, energy-storage solutions, is currently constructing the 50 MW liquid-air, energy-storage facility – with a minimum of 250MWh – at Carrington Village.The facility will be the first commercial liquid-air energy-storage turbomachinery solution in the world, saving CO2 emissions of up to 100 thousand tonnes a year. The ground-breaking technology will help to store energy from renewable sources.Construction of the CRYOBattery began in late 2020 with commercial operation set to commence during 2022. Highview Power will operate the facility in partnership with Carlton Power, a UK independent power-station developer.
