Network Rail has set out plans to revamp Waterloo Station in a far-reaching project that would overhaul a chunk of London’s South Bank. The infrastructure operator published a ‘vision document’ for the ambitious scheme, drawn up by engineers WSP, architects Grimshaw and cost consultants Turner & Townsend among others.Proposed changes to the iconic station, which is one of the busiest in the UK, include a new southern concourse and a remodelled northern entrance.A consolidated bus and taxi hub would be created at the eastern edge of the development, while a footbridge would link the hub to Waterloo East.Broader plans include more than 40 enhanced walking and cycling routes and a raft of new and improved public spaces, as well as the planting of hundreds of trees.Workspace, retail and leisure space would also be created by the project, drawn up in partnership with Lambeth Council, South Bank Employers’ Group and the South Bank Business Improvement District.Network Rail said a programme of short-term investment would kickstart realisation of the vision, while there would be further engagement with the community to develop detailed proposals.Chair Peter Hendy said: “It is imperative Waterloo Station continues to evolve to ensure it is a world class transport hub and meets the needs of the millions of passengers that use the station each year.“This a significant first step towards realising this ambition, and there is a great deal of work to do to progress this forward and find funding.”We look forward to working with our wider partners, passengers, local businesses and organisations, and the local community, as we refine these plans.”Like what you’ve read?
