Government finalises RAAC removal programme

The programme directly addresses the 237 educational institutions identified as containing RAAC. The government’s strategy is twofold, creating distinct procurement routes for the supply chain. A total of 123 schools will be entirely rebuilt as part of the ongoing School Rebuilding Programme (SRP). This element of the plan offers long-term, high-value opportunities for Tier 1 contractors and their extensive subcontractor and supplier networks, encompassing demolition, groundworks, structural engineering, M&E services, and interior fit-out.
Concurrently, a further 108 schools and colleges will receive direct government grants to manage and fund the removal of the material. These projects will be delivered by the relevant responsible bodies, typically local authorities or academy trusts, who will be procuring services directly. This creates immediate opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and specialist contractors with expertise in structural remediation, surveying, and public sector refurbishment. The demand for materials suitable for replacing RAAC, along with associated building products, is expected to increase significantly as these projects are brought to market.
To date, RAAC has been permanently removed from 62 schools and colleges, enabling over 42,000 pupils to return to safe classrooms. The Department for Education has underscored its commitment to upgrading the education estate by announcing a broader £38 billion in capital investment over the next five years. This long-term financial commitment provides the construction industry with valuable visibility and confidence to invest in capacity and skills. For companies seeking to expand their presence in the public sector, this focused RAAC removal scheme and the wider capital investment programme represent a key strategic opportunity to secure consistent, government-backed projects.
