Havering affordable housing programme gains approval

Planning approval has been granted to the Rainham site of the Havering Borough Council and Wates Residential joint-venture programme which will see to the construction of 12 housing estates at an overall cost of £1Bn.

The Napier and New Plymouth House project in Rainham, Havering, received approval from a Strategic Planning Committee last week and now only require the approval of the London Mayor before construction can commence.

The project will see to the creation of some 126 affordable homes as well as a further 71 homes to be sold within the private sector, while the wider ’12 Estates regeneration project’ will aim to construct 5,200 new homes over the course of the next 12 to 15 years and double the amount of affordable housing in the London Borough of Havering.

The Leader of Havering Council, Councillor Damian White stated: “Today marks the next key step in our borough-wide regeneration, signalling our commitment to delivering high-quality housing for local people.

“We have listened to the needs of the community and these plans reflect your feedback to create an estate fit for families and future generations. The Council is committed to consulting with residents throughout the 12 Estates project, and our wider regeneration programme, to help shape developments and communities together.”

The Strategic Planning process was extremely extensive, entailing a series of public consultations in addition to more than 600 one-to-one consultations with members of the public and business owners in the local area.

The Development Director for Wates Residential, Kate Ives added: “This is fantastic news for Havering. We have been working closely with our JV partner to ensure that the new homes in Havering are high-quality and fit in with the unique feel of local area.

“The public consultations have been really helpful in identifying what local residents want to see from the borough’s largest regeneration project and we look forward to starting construction in spring 2020.”

Should the Mayor of London grant the final say of approval, the company Kilnbridge Construction Services has been appointed to demolish the current structures on the site of Napier and New Plymouth house ahead of the new homes’ construction.
