The Isles of Mull and Iona gaining funding for social homes
9 Mar 20

Local authorities on the Scottish Isles of Mull and Iona are set to benefit from the provision of £770,000 towards the construction of social housing in Ulva Ferry.
To be more specific, the Mull and Iona Community Trust were awarded the £770,000 by the Scottish Government’s Rural and Islands Housing Fund which, unsurprisingly, allocates sums of a £30M overall fund for the provision of social housing across rural and island areas.
The project on the Isles will provide family homes for social rent as part of the work that was initiated by the Islands Act which addresses population decline and climate change, while also serving to upgrade transport, the delivery of public services, as well as digital connectivity.
These efforts to establish more housing, in addition to housing infrastructure, on the Scottish Isles will also contribute towards the Scottish Government’s plans to build 50,000 homes by the end of the current term of assembly, with this officially ending in the year 2021, with the support of £3.5Bn.
The Housing Minister, Kevin Stewart stated: “These new homes will support the future of this community and make a real and lasting difference to the lives of existing and new residents. The Mull and Iona Community Trust and the local community have put a substantial amount of work into getting the project to this stage, including securing other funding from a variety of sources.
“The homes will provide high quality, warm, safe and secure places to live and will promote a more sustainable community, helping secure the future of the local school and supporting the economic growth and sustainability of Ulva Ferry.
“I am proud of our record of delivering more than 89,000 affordable homes since 2007 in urban and rural communities right across the country.”
