Residential and transport hub planned in Stockport

Plans for the construction of a residential and transport hub in Stockport have taken a step closer to becoming a reality following the appointment of a main contractor in the form of Willmott Dixon.

Going into further detail, the residential side of the Stockport development will provide approximately 200 new apartments in addition to a rooftop park and a bridge, traversable by both pedestrians and cyclists, which links to the transport side of the development.

Comparatively, the transport side of the development consists of the town’s train station in addition to an interchange extension with 20 bus stands, a sheltered passenger concourse, and access to the A6 motorway.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham stated: “Stockport already has some first-class transport connections and this development will bring together bus, rail, cycling, walking, and, in the future, Metrolink to make the town centre a showcase for truly sustainable transport links.

“The interchange development is just part of wider plans to revitalise Stockport and will act as a blueprint for further town centre regenerations across Greater Manchester.

The Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) Head of Operations, Alex Cropper commented: “We have delivered an impressive array of modern interchanges over the last decade, but this is one of the most striking transport projects we have taken forward in a local town centre.

“Willmott Dixon has a strong track record of delivering large projects like this, including the landmark Rochdale Riverside regeneration scheme, which also links to one of our interchanges. I look forward to working with them to transform the gateway to Stockport town centre.”
