Student accommodation block planned in Edinburgh
23 Oct 19

A property development company named S Harrison, which based in York, has secured planning permission for the construction of a student accommodation building on the site of a disused retail unit near the Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.
The student accommodation building will feature 394 bedrooms, 48 of which will be studios while the remainder will be cluster apartments of between six and nine bedrooms, secure cycle parking, landscaped grounds, breakout study rooms, a games area, a gym, a cinema, and a laundromat.
The Development Director at S Harrison, David Clancy stated: “Whilst we remain very active in our Yorkshire heartland, we are continuing to develop relationships outside the region and particularly in Edinburgh, where we currently have five projects with a gross development value of approximately £150M.
“We are clearly delighted to secure approval to redevelop this brownfield site into much-needed student accommodation. The development’s high-quality design will enhance the local streetscape, as well as bringing new residents into this part of Edinburgh, who are economically and socially active, which will add to the area’s vibrancy and demographic diversity.
“Crucially, it will also free up general housing stock, in accordance with the Council’s student guidance. We are now looking forward to getting these proposals underway in the coming months and will continue to work closely with the Council and local community to deliver this development.”
The new development is situated on the corner of Westfield Road and Westfield Avenue, with S Harrison having also submitted a planning application for a nearby site on Gorgie Road, next to the Water of Leith, for a development which will feature 269 bedrooms.
As well as this, the company is currently upgrading Buchan House, on St Andrew Square in Edinburgh’s New Town, to create a 72 bedroom Malmaison hotel, bar, and brasserie while also converting a block of offices into a hotel development on Ocean Drive in Leith.
