4. Description: The Awarding Authority is one of the world’s foremost independent research and technology organisations, with expertise in solving problems in all aspects of manufacturing, fabrication and whole-life integrity management technologies.
Established in Cambridge, UK in 1946 and with facilities across the globe, the company has a first class reputation for service through its teams of internationally respected consultants, scientists, engineers and support staff, whose knowledge and expertise is available to its Industrial Members as and when they require.
TWI is developing a new Materials Integrity Centre on TeesAMP at Ferrous Road, Middlesbrough, TS2 1DJ with the new centre being supported by ERDF and TVCA funding. The project will upgrade the current research facilities on the site as well as providing a new research and innovation facility. The centre will focus on new materials testing facilities, especially non-destructive testing technologies, and support local economic development. The project will also provide specialist materials and engineering support to local SME’s in the Tees Valley.
TWI is looking to invest in a Differential Scanning Calorimetry machine as part of a suite of material analysis machines to be situated in Middlesbrough. DSC analysis is used for many applications in a broad range of industries like polymers as well as for fundamental research in academia. Examples include glass transition determination and the investigation of chemical reactions, melting and crystallization behaviour.
Other DSC applications deal with the influence of additives, fillers or the processing of materials. The characteristic shape of the individual DSC curves is also used for quality control applications.
TWI is also looking to invest in a Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) machine as part of a suite of material analysis machines to be situated in Middlesbrough. TGA analysis is used for many applications in a broad range of industries like polymers, composites and adhesives as well as for fundamental research in academia. Examples include mass change at controlled temperatures or temperature rates, investigation of chemical reactions, melting and crystallization behaviour.
