4. Description: Data-processing machines (hardware). Hardware consultancy services. The University of Derby has secured Local Growth Funding to establish a Rail Innovation Centre with three Technical Demonstrators aimed at encouraging innovation and collaboration between businesses and their local university.
The purpose of this tender is to procure the core capital equipment to establish the third demonstrator titled “Future Rail Propulsion”. This demonstrator will provide a Hardware-in-the-loop test and development rig, which will be expandable in future to allow different power units to be integrated to create propulsion systems. The systems are expected to include:
•A reconfigurable rolling stock test rig with full system integration to allow the use of both real inputs and simulated data inputs to establish experimental cases.
•Full instrumentation and Hardware-in-the-loop monitoring of the test rig to allow data capture during tests.
•Traction delivery by electric motors, able to be powered by a range of technologies, to include versions and combinations of the following (for example and not exhaustive):
oBattery systems
oSupercapacitor systems
oHydrogen fuel cell systems
oDiesel generator systems
•An instrumented regenerative braking system to allow the evaluation of system performance under different power sources (as above) and simulated use situations.
•A systems integration suite to allow monitoring and control systems to be developed in hardware and software.
•A simulation environment to study the impact of electrification on the wider energy grid network.
•A separate, standalone and portable monitoring system for use on existing test rigs.
