DfI Roads, Consultancy Services operates the Strangford Lough Ferry Service using two roll on roll off (ro-ro) ferries, the MV Portaferry II and the MV Strangford II. Both vessels have Voith Schneider Propulsion equipment installed.The propulsion unit control system on the Strangford II is also manufactured by Voith Global. This contract will be for the continued procurement of spare parts and engineering services to facilitate maintenance and repair of the Voith equipment directly from Voith Turbo Ltd. and will will minimise delay in delivery when parts and engineering services are required urgently.

Regulation 32(5)(b) of the Public Contract Regulations 2015 enables the Department to negotiate a contract directly with one or more economic operators, where a change of supplier would oblige the contracting authority to acquire supplies having different technical characteristics, which would result in incompatibility or disproportionate technical difficulties in operation and maintenance.
