This requirement examined the processing, manufacturing and properties of uranic nuclear fuel and accident tolerant fuel cladding materials (such as SiC). This Hot Isostatic Press (HIP) unit allowed for sintering and densification studies of materials relevant to nuclear fuel materials (oxides, carbides, nitrides), refractory ceramics for accident tolerant fuels (e.g. carbide/nitrides) and ceramic composites such as fuel dispersion blocks, as well as other materials relevant to the nuclear fuel cycle (e.g. zirconolite phases). As such the instrument was required for nuclearizing for the processing of alpha radioactive materials as well as non-active materials.
