9 Oct 19

The Department for Transport have provided funding of more than £100M to four UK road projects which have been granted approval to proceed with construction.
Approval for construction to go ahead on these four road projects has come at the same time that a further seven projects have been allocated funding to develop a business case and seven more have been granted approval to continue through the planning process.
One of the four projects to be granted construction approval includes the £31M Preston ‘Western Distribution Scheme’ which will construct a new dual carriageway, linking the M55 and the A583, that will ultimately reduce traffic through Preston while simultaneously improving the journey time between the enterprise zone at Warton and the Springfields nuclear facility at Salwick.
The Preston scheme is predicted to unlock available land for the construction of 3,575 houses with the direct creation of more than 500 jobs.
Another project included under the £100M from the Department for Transport is the £25.5M Stubbington bypass which will see to the construction of a 3.5km stretch of single carriageway that will improve the Stubbington village environment while also improving access to development sites in Gosport.
The third project to be allocated funding includes the £22.5M White Hart Junction which will improve the intersection between the A419 and A420 to the East of Swindon, unlocking land for the development of 799 dwellings.
And finally, the last project to receive part of the £100M was the £22.9M Wichelstowe ‘Southern Access Scheme’ which will provide an access road to the Wichelstowe development site under the M4 motorway.
Adding to this, the seven projects which have been provided funding to develop a business case include: the Tyne Bridge and Central motorway renewal, the A38 Bromsgrove route enhancement programme, the A511 growth corridor in Leicestershire, the A38 Bristol Airport access improvement project, A38 Manadon interchange in Plymouth, the A374/A386/A3064 Plymouth MRN phase 1, and the A140 Long Stratton bypass.
While the seven projects which have been given approval to progress through the planning stages include: the A1079 improvement in East Riding of Yorkshire, the Isham bypass in Northamptonshire, the A28 Birchington, Acol, and Westgate-on-Sea relief road, the Southampton West Quay road realignment, the A146 Barnby bends, the Lombard roundabout in Croydon, and the A13 Lodge Lane in Dagenham.
