ISG to built two new stands at Lord’s Cricket Ground
The construction group ISG have now broken ground on a new development at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London after being awarded the contract by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
The masterplan for the Lord’s Cricket Ground, formulated by the MCC, will be carried out in three phases, over the course of a two year period, and will ultimately entail the construction of two new spectator stands, each consisting of three tiers, that are situated on either side of the J.P. Morgan Media Centre.
These new stands will add a total of 11,500 new seats to the grounds and will therefore increase the capacity to 31,000, while also improving amenities through the addition of dining facilities, 12 food and beverage outlets, and two hospitality restaurants.
Phase one of this scheme commenced after the conclusion of the second of The Ashes Tests and entailed the demolition of the Compton and Edrich stands which are planned to be replaced by the new developments.
The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by guests from MCC, ISG, the project architect Wilkinson Eyre, and media outlets ITV and Sky Sports News.
The Managing Director for UK Construction South, Steven McGee stated: “The redevelopment of the Compton and Edrich stands will enable an additional 2,600 spectators to experience the thrilling atmosphere and spectacle of world-class sporting endeavour at the home of cricket.
“The MCC is responding to rising demand for seats at one of the most famous cricket grounds in the world, and the new stands represent sympathetic, yet progressive and future-proofed additions to the existing facilities at Lords.
“We will be taking our experience delivering iconic sporting venues across the UK and applying this directly to a complex scheme that will have an enduring legacy for cricket fans for many generations to come.”
