Controversial McDonald’s plans secure green light

Plans for a new drive-thru McDonald’s at a site in Ty Glas, Cardiff, have secured approval despite opposition to the development.Permission was sought for alterations to a building on Ty Glas Avenue which was last occupied by the Harvester brand.The site benefits from planning permission allowing it to be be used as a restaurant, while alterations would be carried out to provide a drive-thru circulating around the west side of the property.Approval has been granted despite three petitions, of 59, 51 and 15 signatories, objecting to the proposal on grounds including the proximity to schools and a leisure centre and an increase in traffic. Former Cardiff City Council leader and local ward member Phil Bate is an objector, with litter and the possibility of anti-social behaviour among his concerns.Representations were also received in support of the application, citing the economic benefits of the job-creating restaurant plan.A report scrutinised by Cardiff City Council’s planning committee said the proposal was considered acceptable and recommended planning permission was granted, subject to section 106 obligations and conditions.
