Old cinema to make way for housing
A proposal to demolish a former cinema to make way for 40 flats and new commercial space in Northampton has been given the go-ahead.Applicant Roses Drapery Stores has won permission to knock down the old Tivoli Cinema in Towcester Road, which has been used most recently by The Sofa Kings, and construct a new five-storey resdient building on the site alongside 1,399 sq ft of retail space.A document submitted to Northampton Borough Council ahead of a final decision being made said:The Tivoli Cinema opened in 1935.
