Edinburgh economy to benefit from Boroughmuir development
22 Oct 19

The home construction company, CALA Homes has been appointed to redevelop the former Boroughmuir High School in Edinburgh into a building with 87 contemporary apartments.
According to CALA Homes the Boroughmuir site has a construction value of £20.4M and will create an economic output of some £21.5M, likewise creating 55 construction jobs and 50 supply chain jobs during the construction process, which is scheduled to begin in early 2020.
As well as the £41.9M cash injection to the local economy, provided by the construction value and economic output referenced above, S75 developer contributions will also reach a figure of £757,000 while the local authority is predicted to gain £290,000 from additional tax revenues, bringing the total economic boost to the local area to approximately £45M.
The S75 developer contributions will be dedicated to improving the housing infrastructure of the surrounding area such as schools, leisure facilities, and infrastructure itself.
The Sales and Marketing Director at CALA Homes (East), Philip Hogg stated: “We are committed to developing communities rather than simply building new homes.
“The construction sector has a pivotal role to play in building and sustaining local communities from helping local trades to thrive and creating jobs through to helping independent shops to prosper.
“Given the sensitive nature of this refurbishment project, we have carefully selected specialist subcontractors, some of which are local, who bring extensive experience and expertise to this development.
“We are proud that our work can bring benefits for both people that choose to live on our development and also to the wider Bruntsfield community.
“We are delighted to be investing in Edinburgh and believe our plans will have a positive effect not only by renovating a building of local importance but also by improving infrastructure for the existing community.
“Our track record in the area shows that by engaging with the local contractors and community throughout the design process, we are able to translate our building projects into significant investment in the local area.”
The building was originally constructed in 1914 by renowned architect, John Alexander Carfrae.
