M11 and Gilden Way improvement scheme planned in Essex

Within the next few months, works are expected to commence on the construction of a new link road between the M11 and Gilden Way to the East of the town of Harlow in Essex after having been organised by the Essex County Council and the South East Local Enterprise Partnership and funded through Highways England.

To go into more detail, the M11 to Gilden Way improvement scheme will serve to improve congestion and road safety in Essex by creating a new junction (Junction 7A) which will connect the motorway to the carriageway which runs parallel to it.

Furthermore, the scheme will also improve three roundabout in the near vicinity, including the London Road Roundabout, the Church Gate Roundabout, and the Campions Roundabout, converting the Church Gate Roundabout to possess which is referred to as a ‘hamburger-style’ of arrangement.

The Deputy Leader of Essex County Council and the Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Councillor Kevin Bentley stated: “This is a critically important piece of new infrastructure which we have been working with partners for a number of years to help make a reality.

“This new junction will not only be a boost to the thousands of people who are travelling into and out of Harlow on a daily basis through alleviating some of the congestion issues in the town, but offers new public transport opportunities and will help further unlock the economic potential of Harlow through supporting business growth in the area.”

The Pre-Construction Director of the GRAHAM Civil Engineering Division, Stephen Hand commented: “We are pleased to have been awarded this hugely beneficial highways scheme by Essex County Council which is the latest in our growing portfolio of highway improvement schemes.

“The project will reduce congestion and improve access to Harlow’s road network, creating economic growth and improving connectivity for residents, businesses, and visitors to Harlow.”

The Regional Delivery Director for the East at Highways England, Julie Crawford added: “Highways England is pleased to be supporting these plans to build an additional junction on the M11 at Harlow. We are confident that, once delivered, this new junction will contribute towards improving safety and reducing congestion, two of Highways England’s top priorities.”
