The Awarding Authority has been established as the delivery body responsible for a safe, sustainable and publicly acceptable programme for the geological disposal of the specified location higher activity radioactive waste. In December 2018 the UK Government published a policy which laid out the commitment to a community consent-based process to find a suitable location for a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) for higher activity radioactive waste. In January 2019 the Welsh Government published an equivalent policy.

Engaging with early career stakeholders from academia, industry and policymaking is a crucial part of achieving these aims, helping to set the direction for engineering research in the near future.
