Kier reaches halfway point in St Bartholomew’s Hospital
6 Dec 19

The construction and property development company Kier have reached the halfway point in the construction of the independent Nuffield Health hospital at St Bartholomew’s in the City of London.
The new St Bartholomew’s Hospital has cost Nuffield Health a total figure of £65M and will include facilities such as 48 bedrooms, four state-of-the-art operating theatres, 28 consultation rooms, as well as physiotherapy and diagnostics facilities, with completion of the development scheduled for the spring of 2021.
The hospital will specialise in the areas of cardiology, cardiac surgery, oncology, and orthopaedics while also complementing Nuffield Health’s 35 consumer fitness and wellbeing clubs, 63 on-site corporate gyms, and 150 GPs within the City of London catchment area.
In the acquisition of this site, Nuffield Health partnered with the Barts Health NHS Trust to lease the former pathology building which is widely recognised for its appearance in the BBC’s Sherlock TV series after Benedict Cumberbatch enacted a scene wherein Sherlock Holmes leaps from the building’s roof in a fake suicide attempt.
The Kier Project Manager, Peter McStay stated: “This project is vital to the City of London and I am pleased we have reached this major milestone in the construction of the building, taking us one step closer to delivering modern, efficient and patient-focused healthcare facilities.”
The Chief Executive Officer of Nuffield Health, Steve Gray added: “I am pleased to mark this construction milestone today but also to see the solid progress towards opening the City’s first independent hospital in 2021.
“St Bartholomew’s has such rich history, having been responsible for numerous medical breakthroughs since it began in 1123, and we are delighted to ensure these two redundant buildings will once again be centres of quality healthcare as St Bartholomew’s celebrates its 900th anniversary in a few years.”
