19 Nov 19

A subsidiary of the construction and property group Wates, named Wates Residential, has been granted approval for the construction of 201 homes as part of the new Gascoigne Estate on Abbey Road in Barking.
The Barking and Dagenham Council granted permission for the construction of 201 new homes, 60 per cent of which will be classed as affordable housing, a new children’s play area, electric car charging points, more than 360 new cycling parking spaces, a Barking Town Centre District Heating Network, and solar panels.
The Managing Director of Be First, Pat Hayes stated: “Redeveloping the Gascoigne Estate is a major step in the regeneration of the borough. This decision paves the way for more quality homes local people can afford.”
In addition to Wates Residential being contracted to carry out the construction responsibilities on this project, the architecture firm White Arkitekter was contracted as the designer for the second phase of Gascoigne East and the first phase of Gascoigne West.
The Managing Director for Wates Residential, Paul Nicholls commented: “Today’s decision marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Gascoigne Estate in the delivery of much needed high quality new homes for local people, because we believe that everyone deserves a great place to live.
“We are delighted to be working in partnership with Be First to help realise this vision and also look forward to working with the local community to deliver education, training and skills opportunities as we commence work on site.”
A representative of White Arkitekter, Linda Thiel added: “We are very proud of being involved in this important project.
“At White Arkitekter we take our responsibility of planning sustainable, equitable cities very seriously. We’re delighted to team up with Be First and effect change together.”
Construction of the scheme will commence in January 2020 while completion will not be achieved until the spring of 2022.
