Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls completed in Thamesmead

The contractor company Kier has officially completed the construction of the Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls in Thamesmead, London, and has now handed over the new development to the commissioning organisation, the Department for Education.
Going into further detail, the construction of the Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls entailed the delivery of a new build three-storey development with an approximate floor space of 8,900sq m, containing state-of-the-art facilities for up to 1,200 pupils such as new classrooms, science labs, ICT suites, a new sports hall, and an external hard court games area.
Furthermore, the construction of this new academy was commissioned in order to address the shortage of school places in the area of South East London, particularly for the demographic of secondary school aged girls, with the newly constructed school serving as a twin to the Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys.
The Kier London and South East Managing Director, Cliff Thomas stated: “We are delighted to hand over this vital project to the Department for Education and Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls. We have extensive experience in delivering first-class educational buildings with state-of-the-art facilities.
“This was delivered under a demanding time frame and with great collaboration from all the stakeholders this was successfully completed to an excellent standard. This is an important school for students in the area and I look forward to seeing it being used for years to come.”
The completion of this new school development marks the beginning of Kier building their portfolio of constructing educational development in the South East and London, after already establishing themselves well in the East of England, specifically Norfolk.
Kier have also recently begun the construction of the new school development in Portsmouth, Hampshire, which will likewise accommodate 1,200 students and is predicted to reach full completion in the Summer of 2021.
