Earthshot prize – Low carbon concrete
The Earthshot Prize has been to designed to find and grow the solutions that will repair our planet this decade. Almost everything we do has a carbon footprint, and that carbon is destabilising our planet. The three Fix Our Climate finalists for The Earthshot Prize 2022 have developed groundbreaking solutions to repair the damage created by carbon.
UK-based science-led construction company, Low Carbon Materials (LCM), has been named as one of three international finalists in the Fix Our Climate category, in the world’s most prestigious environmental prize, The Earthshot Prize, 2022.
Set up by three scientists, LCM is shaping the green construction sector with its science-based, lower carbon, new-age building material OSTO®.
OSTO is a carbon-negative lightweight aggregate for concrete produced out of waste and by-products. It is a game-changer for the construction industry, which currently makes up to 8% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions*. The product works by making traditional carbon-intensive blocks carbon-zero, thereby reducing their environmental impact.
Over the last ten years, the evidence that we face urgent challenges to protect the environment has become indisputable, and it’s clear that the time to act is now. Drawing inspiration from the concept of moonshots, which since the moon landing in 1969 has become shorthand to talk about the most ambitious and ground-breaking goals, Prince William announced The Earthshot Prize: an ambitious set of challenges to inspire a decade of action to repair the planet. We believe in the power of human ingenuity to prove to us all that the seemingly impossible is possible.
