Construction centre opened at Lincoln College

Last Thursday saw the launch of a new eco-excellence facility at Lincoln College, named the Gusto Homes ECOnstruction Centre of Excellence, which will train college construction students sustainable, low-carbon building techniques.

The facility will promote a new employer-led approach to construction training which focuses more towards using eco-friendly methods for the construction of eco-homes, as gas will be phased out of construction within the course of the next decade.

It is hoped that the new facility will accommodate 100 students per year while it is the case that 20 local construction businesses attended the opening event last week and pledged their support to assist the college and its students.

The CEO of Gusto Homes, Steff Wright stated: “This is a real opportunity to work with the college to develop the skills of local people during an exciting time of change within the house building and wider construction industry. It is also a space where companies developing innovative new construction products can showcase them to people within the industry.

“Building regulation changes are inevitable if we’re to meet challenging government targets and there will be a need for the whole industry to up-skill and develop.”

The Chairman of Lincolnshire County Council, Councillor Colin Bridges added: “The college has demonstrated an extraordinary level of responsiveness to emerging trends in the sector and the demand for skilled workers.

“I would urge more local construction firms to engage with the college to help it achieve its vision.”

The Lincoln College Group CEO, Gary Headland concluded: “Our focus will be on continuing to listen to employers to ensure we produce highly skilled and productive people to add economic and social value in the local area.

“We are developing a really exciting student experience that will see them spending a significant amount of time in industry so they can start adding value to local firms from day-one of their apprenticeships.”

Gusto Homes operates across the East Midlands, primarily, and has constructed over 300 new homes in its 20 years of operation, with its most recent developments in Woodlands Edge near Lincoln and Collingham Brook in Nottinghamshire featuring fully-electric, passive solar homes.
