Cumberland Cancer Centre underway in Carlisle
17 Feb 20

Construction has recently begun on site for the brand new Cumberland Cancer Centre in Carlisle, following a formal bricklaying ceremony that commenced operations on the oncology unit which is due for delivery in the Summer of 2021.
Going into more detail, the construction consultancy company Gleeds, who have been appointed as cost advisors for the project, have reported that the Cumberland Cancer Centre is costing a total sum of £35M and will entail the delivery of a chemotherapy day unit, with 15 chairs and three single-bedrooms, two medical linear accelerator (LINAC) radiotherapy machines, a CT scanner suite, consultation rooms, examination rooms, clinical planning areas, and a small cafe area.
Ultimately, the new two-storey building will accommodate all of Cumberland Infirmary’s oncology services under one convenient roof after the previous building, which was constructed in the 1970s, became outdated and obsolete.
The Director at Gleeds, Andrew McNulty stated: “North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust has shown a huge commitment to improving the experience of those touched by cancer with this new building. It will not only ensure that patients benefit from the latest equipment but will also immeasurably improve the environment in which they receive the treatment they need. Gleeds has extensive experience in the healthcare sector and I am delighted to be playing a role on this incredibly worthwhile project.”
The Radiotherapy Services Manager at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, Suzanne Stanley added: “This is a landmark moment for the project and we’re really excited that we’ll be able to provide such wonderful facilities to further enhance cancer services that is truly patient focused here at Cumberland Infirmary.
“The new building will be state-of-the-art but it will also be homely. We want to make sure that when people come for their cancer treatment, they are receiving it in a relaxing and comfortable environment, an environment that can put them at ease at what is often a frightening time.”
