Green light for Dundee’s pioneering Green Transport Hub

McLaughlin & Harvey have secured the £11.1M contract for the main construction works on Dundee’s new Green Transport Hub, a cutting-edge initiative aimed at transforming urban mobility.
Following their successful delivery of enabling works at the Bell Street multi-storey car park, McLaughlin & Harvey will now oversee the project’s ambitious redevelopment, which is being delivered under SCAPE Scotland’s framework.
Key Features of the Green Transport Hub
The project will see the car park transformed into a modern, sustainable transport hub. Key upgrades include:
- 350 electric vehicle (EV) charging points, supported by rooftop solar panels and a battery storage system.
- Car share spaces and an e-bike hire service to promote sustainable travel.
- A fully pedestrianised ground floor featuring information points, meeting spaces, and enhanced landscaping.
- Active travel routes designed to integrate with future connections and developments.
A greener Dundee
Chris Boyle, Framework Director at McLaughlin & Harvey, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for the project: “We are delighted to continue our relationship with Dundee City Council at the new Green Transport Hub. This regeneration project demonstrates how collaboration through the SCAPE framework can fast-track design and construction to meet ambitious sustainability goals. This hub will play a key role in delivering a greener, more connected city.”
Councillor Steven Rome, Convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth, and Infrastructure, highlighted the hub’s transformative potential: “This ambitious redevelopment will revolutionize the Bell Street car park into a pioneering green transport hub, encouraging sustainable travel habits and contributing to our goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045. The hub will enhance connectivity, make the city centre safer and greener, and attract more people to live, work, and visit Dundee.”
Funding and Support
The Green Transport Hub & Spokes initiative has been allocated £14.4M from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, with an additional £1.6M provided by Transport Scotland’s Active Travel Infrastructure Fund to support the main works.
Delivering for the Community
The completed hub will include enhanced landscaping and active travel routes, creating a pedestrian-friendly environment designed to integrate seamlessly with future developments. This project represents a significant step forward in Dundee’s efforts to tackle climate change, improve urban connectivity, and build vibrant, empowered communities.
Construction on the Green Transport Hub is a bold move towards a sustainable future, positioning Dundee as a leader in green urban infrastructure.
