M6 Junction Ten now underway in Walsall

Work has now begun on the brand new M6 Junction Ten near Walsall in the West Midlands by the contractor company John Sisk and Son after being commissioned by a combination of Highways England and the Walsall Council.

Going into more details, the new M6 Junction Ten will include upgraded and modernised bridges to replace the existing ones which have been in place for more than 50 years now and the highway itself will be widened to include more lanes and thus reduce congestion.

The Highways England Project Manager, David Reed stated: “These improvements will bring huge benefits to Junction Ten and the surrounding area where there is significant congestion and delays at the moment impacting on thousands of drivers and local businesses.

“This much-needed upgrade will bring smoother and safer journeys for drivers, help to meet the region’s economic needs and replace the 50-year-old bridges which would otherwise need a large investment in maintenance.

“We are delighted to be making a start on this project and bringing all of these welcome benefits to the people of Walsall and beyond.”

In terms of cost, the new junction has come with a price tag of around £78M, which Highways England and Walsall Council have pledged to pay with support from the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), while completion of the project is forecast to be achieved in Spring 2022.

The Deputy Leader of Walsall Council, Councillor Adrian Andrew commented: “This is an important partnership between Walsall Council and Highways England, I’m delighted that work has begun. Junction Ten is an important part of Walsall’s transport infrastructure and the improvements will be a major boost to the economy of the borough and the wider region.”

The Chair of the Black Country LEP, Stewart Towe added: “The Black Country LEP has provided significant investment into the project through the local growth fund and we are delighted that the works are set to begin.

“This major scheme will bring much-needed improvements to Junction Ten of the M6, easing congestion and improving traffic flows around the Black Country LEP Enterprise Zones bringing economic improvements to the area both in terms of business opportunities and employment.”
