St Loyes Extra Care Home topped-out in Exeter

A topping-out ceremony has recently taken place at the site of a new Passivhaus standard care home in Exeter named the St Loyes Extra Care Home, with notable attendees including the likes of Kier project managers and local city councillors.

To provide more detail on the St Loyes Extra Care Home, which will be situated on Topsham Road, the appointed contractor on the project is, as has already been mentioned, Kier Construction, who were procured as part of a £9.8M contract.

Furthermore, the facilities which will be included in this new development include 53 apartments, lounges, dining rooms, hobby spaces, a library, a salon, a spa treatment room, and landscaped gardens, all of which have been specially designed to accommodate elderly people and those suffering with dementia.

The Operations Director at Kier Regional Building Western and Wales, Doug Lloyd stated: “We are extremely proud to be working with Exeter City Council to build the UK’s first PassivHaus standard care home.

“Topping-out of the main structure is an important milestone for St Loyes Extra Care Scheme that is set to provide comfortable living space with low energy costs for its residents when it opens and provide longevity as the building will adapt to predicted weather conditions.

“Working with our local supply chain, we will spend the coming months completing the building ready for opening in autumn. During this time, we will continue to engage with the local community and showcase all that this building will have to offer residents of Exeter for years to come.”

The Devon County Council Cabinet Member, responsible for adult care and health, Councillor Andrew Leadbetter added: “We would all rather be able to stay living in our own homes as our health deteriorates. Extra care housing like this, alongside personal care delivered in the community, is giving people that opportunity to receive the care they need while remaining as independent as possible in their own home.

“This is the first Extra Care scheme for us in the city, but follows great success in towns including Totnes, Newton Abbot, Okehampton, Ivybridge and Bideford.”
