Stornoway port authority awards marina construction contract
2 Apr 19
A marina construction contract has been awarded to RJ McLeod contractors as part of Stornoway port authority’s long-term plans.
The marina construction is a big part of Stornoway Port Authority’s ambitious 20-year plan to improve the profile of the harbour. Contractor firm RJ McLeod won the £5million contract thanks to their history of projects in the area.
The new marina will make up a large part of the plan, providing space for larger boats to dock that currently cannot be accommodated. There are also plans for a deep water port to allow cruise ships to dock, increasing the tourism profile of the port.
Areas Manager for HIE and the Outer Hebrides Rachel McKenzie said: “Our islands are a key sailing destination for visitors and Stornoway is an important link in the chain of marinas in the Outer Hebrides.”
“These improved facilities will boost the town’s offering and we are very pleased to support the SPA’s Newton Basin project which aims to safeguard the crucial role of the port in supporting the economic growth of our islands.”
“Marine tourism makes a significant contribution to the development of the islands and the town’s harbour is an integral part of what makes Stornoway and the Outer Hebrides a leading tourist destination in the UK.”
Plans have been welcomed by the town’s sailing groups and local authorities. The new marina will have space for 70 new leisure craft berths, a marine engineering workshop, and infrastructure to allow for future business, industrial, and commercial space.
The project is receiving £2.75million from the Scottish government and £3.5million in funding has been approved from the Board of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE). Marine tourism forms a large part of plans for Scottish prosperity and Stornoway is a key location, providing access to the outer Hebrides and already a popular tourist destination.
