ISG hands over BBC Wales Broadcast Centre

Keys to the BBC Wales Broadcast Centre in Cardiff have officially changed hands following official completion of the corporation’s £44M Welsh headquarters.

Four years in the making, the ISG built Broadcast Centre will house BBC Cymru Wales, accommodating some 1,200 personnel on a site directly opposite Cardiff Central station. A comprehensive 18 month fit-out courtesy of Overbury and Sheppard Robson now follows, after which the building will become the first BBC facility to utilise live IP technology.

Designed by Foster + Partners, Broadcast Centre remains integral to the wider Central Square regeneration scheme now in full swing. Central Square is a 1.5 million square foot, mixed-use regeneration project which initially began in 2014 with the now occupied One Central Square and today continues with its sister building – imaginatively named Two Central Square.

Jon James, Regional Director at ISG, had this to say: “Legacy is a fitting term to describe the immense achievement represented by this celebration today. The successful delivery of the BBC’s new headquarters in Wales exactly on programme is a fine example of what our industry can achieve when it works collaboratively, embraces technology and innovation and works towards a common goal.

“There is an amazing sense of pride from every single person involved in this project knowing that the legacy of the BBC’s move to central Cardiff will impact our city for generations to come.”

Speaking at the official hand over, Alan Bainbridge – Director of Property at the BBC – added: “To hand a building over of this scale and complexity exactly on time and budget is a real achievement. We signed the agreement for lease back in December 2014 and the predicted handover date was today – it has been a fantastic effort by all parties and we now look forward to completing the fit-out ready for occupation next year.”
